RP Etiquette at Fort Weyr
We’ve noticed some confusion arising over etiquette involving RP at Fort Weyr and we’d like to provide some guidance on etiquette and playing with others in the area:
- Most of Fort’s players will go out into a public room if RP-OK.
- If a player is out in a public, not ‘off the beaten path’ room, it is safe and encouraged to page that player, let him/her know that you’re coming and head out to play with that person. You may also just show up in the room, and we encourage use of the < OOC > feature of the game to communicate with the other player as you arrive to work out how you’d like to proceed. A lack of response may indicate that the other player has been pulled away unexpectedly and probably does not mean that you’re being ignored.
- It’s perfectly okay to ask for RP by page, on the FTW knot or by +mail. Just try to keep the rate of requests to play reasonable – flooding the knot with requests every few minutes, lots of repeated pages and a large quantity of mails will probably make many players feel uncomfortable.
- Please keep knot requests for RP friendly and polite.
Examples of friendly requests: “Hey there! Anyone up for a scene?” “Hi everyone! I’m heading down to the living cavern for RP.”
Examples of unfriendly requests: “*Pout* Noooo one is plaaaying with me.” “Where’s all the RP at? Why isn’t anyone playing?“ - If a scene already has 3 or more players, please page the participants before going out to join to see if the scene is able to support another player.
- If a scene is ‘off the beaten path’ e.g. not in the Living Cavern, Common Room, Work Rooms, Hot Springs, Bowl or Records, please page the participants prior to joining. Sometimes players may be engaged in ‘quieter’ RP that is still public in nature. Choosing to play in one of the ‘general use’ rooms listed above usually constitutes an understanding that other people are likely to join in if others are available for play in those locations.
- Players in the TP room should always be paged prior to joining as the nature of the TP room is such that it’s likely scenes taking place there are plot-oriented and may have been arranged ahead of time with a specific purpose in mind. Fort’s TP room is #1080, but its name may change frequently depending on the setting the players have put on the room at the time.
- We encourage the use of ‘vignettes’ – pieces of short fiction that involve descriptive scenes with non-player characters (NPCs). Please check with other players before featuring their characters in your vignettes, unless the subject of your vignette is your character’s personal opinion about another character or event. Typically, vignettes are shared on LiveJournal along with posted logs. The standard etiquette if you write a vignette with another person’s character in it, is to lock the vig to yourself and the other player and ask them to review the vignette before posting it public. An alternative is to email the other player first or another means of sharing the content of the vignette before posting it for public consumption by the game.
- Please respect requests to quiet it down on the knot, though the option to quiet the knot entirely is also available.
